- [Why Brush Before Bedtime?](https://www.drewyerdentistry.com/why-brush-before-bedtime/): Brushing before going to sleep every night can help prevent cavities. To start let's talk about how cavities form.  Bacteria that live in all our mouths  and on our teeth eat the same sugars we eat, including sweets and other carbohydrates like breads and pastas.  After consuming these sugars, the bacteria, called Streptococcus Mutans, produce an acidic byproduct that erodes the enamel in our teeth causing a cavity. During the day and especially while eating a meal, our bodies produce saliva to aid in digestion.  This saliva is also our bodies top defense against cavity causing bacteria.  Saliva contains proteins and minerals  which help combat the acid byproduct that causes cavities and aids in washing away food particles that get stuck on our teeth.  Unfortunately, at night our body stops producing saliva at the same rate as during the day and puts our teeth at risk for decay.  That means it is extra important to get rid of any food remnants in our mouths before bedtime, a time when our mouth isn't protected by our saliva and can easily become an acidic environment, an environment cavities love.  So make sure you brush before bed!

The idea of being needle phobic, well, hey, I don’t like ‘em either. The thing is, with the gauge (thinness) and sharpness (beveled and single use) of our needles, it may come as news that our needle phobia is decidedly more due to the sting of the anesthetic itself rather than the prick of the needle. Add to that the occasions when an injection does not result in “comfortably numb”, thereby requiring an additional injection, and we have one of those “adding insult to injury” type of experiences. You have always been wonderfully complementary and grateful for my painless injection techniques and until recently, we did not have a method towards addressing comfortably getting to numb. Those days are now behind us! The utilization of Buffered Anesthetic, in combination with my learned, practiced, gentle administration of the drug, brings a faster, more dependable onset of the “comfortably numb” effects. Alkalinization or Buffering, allows a faster onset of the local anesthetic effect while reducing the pain of the injection – quicker, more efficient, more predictable, more comfortable – GAME CHANGER! So very grateful for our partners in Research and Development who bring us this wonderful adjunct to our care.

- [One and one don’t make Two](https://www.drewyerdentistry.com/one-and-one-dont-make-two/): No wonder that Pete Townsend and Roger Daltrey got it, as they penned the lyrics for “Bargain” (Who’s Next).  Symbiosis, and more appropriately, mutualism, the inter-are/inter-being we have with each other that, when recognized, allows for our full actualization, the full realization of our “self” in the reflection of an other.  Recently I viewed the Academy Award Winning movie, The King’s Speech.  Initially, the client allows the therapist only the “mechanical.”  Certainly, some success is realized through this level of partnership.  However, it is only when the bodymindspirit is touched, the deeper depths of the relationship probed, does the client receive a comprehensive and ultimately effective therapy.  The therapist, on the other hand, has exemplary elocution skills and those skills alone do not allow for his full manifestation of self.  As example, he doesn’t get the part in his play audition, and never has gotten the elusive “major role.” However, when the student appears, as the WWI soldiers coming back to Australia were referenced in the movie, the therapist recognizes his self-actualization.  He was realizing his “completeness”, if you will, in partnership with the shell-shocked veterans responding to his support.  Similarly, when the client recognizes that he has a choice over his history dictating who he is and how he is showing up in the world, or waking up to new ways of being and doing and leaving his-story behind, he knows himself perhaps most deeply for the first time.

- [Tooth Extraction](https://www.drewyerdentistry.com/burtonsville-md/tooth-extraction/): If you do need to have a tooth extraction, there are several ways that we can go about the procedure. First, we will numb the area of your mouth so that you do not feel any direct discomfort. You may feel some pressure during the procedure but otherwise remain relaxed and comfortable. If your tooth has matured and broken through the gums, we can use dental tools to gently loosen and remove it from the socket. Afterward, the area will be cleaned thoroughly, and gauze will be used to stop the bleeding while you recover.
